I want to set up a salt water aquarium, is there professional help?
Saturday, November 29th, 2008I want to set up a 110 gallon salt water aquarium in my apartment, I am nervous about doing it correctly. Is there professional help that can come out and personally help me with the set up?
I understand your concern, however it is better to do it yourself so you understand what you are doing. There isn’t a right or wrong. Get yourself a book, not to say they are professionals anyone can write a how to book or talk to your local fish store, and I mean someone who knows what they are going.
Most won’t come and help you. you can hire them to do it for you but usually they do it you pay them. Most also will not explain to you what they are doing (like it is a trade secret or something). your best bet is to look in the yellow pages or talk to you local fish store. Seeif one of the Better clerks will come out after work, then again are they pro’s?
There isn’t much to setting up the tank. Really. The reef keepers bible is another great book to pick up in your travels.

How do I set up an outdoor pond for my turtles?
Friday, November 21st, 2008I have 3 red eared slider turtles, approx a year and a half old. They are growing quickly and I wanted to create an outdoor pond environment for them. I live in the panhandle of Florida. How do i set it up? What is required? Do I build a wall around the pond? Will I have to worry about predators, like hawks and racoons? How do I provide a safe environment for my kids' pets but reclaim my living room from the massive aquarium?
A few different elements come into play:
1. The basic pond is constructed like any other. As long as it is large enough and has at least something they can crawl out on, it will be OK.
2. Cleanliness is an issue- turtles are really, really messy eaters and will fould a small pond quickly. Stocking it as a balanced environment will help but you probably want to include a way to easily drain and clean it.
3. Predators will be a big concern unless it is a really big pond with a really deep part. Racoons, skinks, and dogs will be the biggest worries. You also have some concerns with other animals coming to live in the pond.
4. One option that works for a lot of people is an above ground 'raised pool' feature- build a sturdy wall, fill the piond to about a foot from the top, plant it, build rafts, then create a screened cover from hardware mesh and sturdy materials to cover it with. Make it so it is secured when you are not around, but can be tucked away easily when you are around.
I posted a good turtle pond link- try other links at the site www.tortoise.org as well.

Need advice on setting up a 60 gal aquarium with an all ready installed under gravel heater for drawf ciclides
Wednesday, November 19th, 2008I had intended it to be a planted/driftwood scape for Disus but I have a pair of blue eyed drawf ciclids that are very prolific, I also have several other varities and thought about a comunittie tank. My question is about changing to a rock, cave, sort of tiered. I'd like to find artifical rocks cause they are lighter but can I still use the same substrate/heater set up, and where can I find the rocks? I've looked online under aquirum acesssories but no luck so far.
Thanks in advance for any help you can be.
I'm not doing the discus with the drawf chiclids but was wondering if I can leave the undergravel heater with out it being dug up.
Are you planning on having Discus than you will not be able to have the Dwarf Cichilds.
Discus need a very calm environment to survive properly.
As for rocks, and decoration look at your local landscape suppliers that sell stone and rock. That will be your cheapest and best way to location what you need.
