I was going to start a salt water aquarium and had purchased some crushed coral. Now I’ve changed my mind and I’m going to do a tropical aquarium instead. I’m just wondering if crushed coral is a safe medium to use or should I stick to gravel?
I am using crushed coral in my freshwater tank with cherry shrimp and endler guppies and everyone is doing fine. I got my crushed coral in a used tank I purchased at a swap meet so I was a little worried that there might be residue from copper based medications but so far I’ve had no die offs or other problems.
How many pounds of crushed coral are we talking about here? If you have a large aquarium and don’t plan to keep african cichlids, then it may be a good idea to use regular gravel from the start.
As a rule, branch coral should not be used in a freshwater aquarium because most fish can hurt themselves if they run into it. Goldfish especially are easily damaged by sharp rocks and rough shells. Depending upon the type of fish you plan to keep, you might be ok with the crushed coral but just remember that if it doesn’t work out and you decide to change the coral to regular gravel later, you will need to take steps to avoid having to cycle your tank all over again.
